These two antique afternoon dresses from the later Romantic/Biedermeier period, dating to the 1840s, are rare survivors of American mid-19th-century fashion and were likely worn by mother and daughter. Both garments are crafted from rich brown moiré silk, yet each reflects a distinct cut and silhouette, offering a fascinating glimpse into family dress traditions and period tailoring.
The mother’s dress features a pronounced waistline, an unusual detail for this era, and closes at the front with small buttons. The long back panel, likely extended at a later date, adds volume and structure. Corded hem, black velvet ribbon, and passementerie on the cuffs enhance the dress’s elegance. It is very well preserved, with only a small spot on the left chest.
The daughter’s dress mirrors the mother’s in material and hem treatment, but includes cord appliqué and glass buttons on the cuffs, adding youthful charm. It is also in very good condition, with a small spot on the back and a tiny hole in the chest area.
These two 1840s moiré silk dresses are exceptionally rare finds, ideal for collectors of Romantic-period fashion, American textile history, or museum-quality family ensembles. Please note: brooches are not included; the replaced “belt” is part of the offering.
